A striking visual feature are the flames that ripple across the back piece, carved from fine Balkan maple. Chosen for its density, stability, and visual beauty, this wood was carefully seasoned and selected for its dramatic figure. Its even grain enhances the instrument’s acoustic balance and responds beautifully to carving and thickening of the plates , resulting in a sound that is both powerful and refined.

The maple’s texture is subtly revealed through delicate wear in the antique-style varnish, a warm blend of deep reds and umber browns that evokes centuries of use and preservation. These tonal hues amplify the instrument’s vintage character while complementing its structural elegance.

Structural details reflect Guadagnini’s influence: the scroll is bold, while the f-holes left unfluted, in keeping with the original model display the distinctive oval eyes. The viola’s open C-bouts and generous body proportions further underscore its visual authority and contribute to its expansive tonal palette.

From the outset, it stood out as a benchmark for acoustic performance. Yet, despite its sonic qualities, we always felt that the original varnish did not fully align with the cello’s character, particularly the depth and maturity of its sound.

In 2025, after careful consideration, we made the decision to revarnish the instrument. This step was taken not lightly, but with a deep respect for the inspiration behind it: the celebrated Ngeringa cello attributed to G. B. Guadagnini. Our aim was to bring the external appearance more closely in line with the instrument’s tonal voice and historical roots, creating a unified artistic whole.

This cello features a slightly increased body length compared to the original model, offering enhanced projection and resonance while still meeting the ergonomic needs of modern players. The design successfully balances contemporary performance requirements with the elegance and poetic charm of classical Italian making. The scroll is bold and sculptural, imbued with presence and character, while the slender shoulders ensure ease of access across all registers, allowing for fluid, unrestricted playing even in the highest positions.

The revarnishing process has brought the instrument to a new level of visual harmony. The deep, layered tones of red and brown, accented by a hand-applied patina, now echo the warmth and complexity of the cello’s voice. Together, these elements form a cohesive and expressive work, an instrument that reflects both tradition and innovation, and one that continues to inspire through its sound and presence.

Soft and graceful lines merged with intricate scroll detailing, purfling, and f-holes, resulting in a visually captivating instrument that complemented its extraordinary tonal qualities.

The culmination of our passion, expertise, and dedication to the art of violin making led to the creation this refined instrument that stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving its rich heritage while incorporating our own artistic touch.

This viola features moderate archings and elongated, refined corners. The reddish-brown varnish beautifully enhances the flamed maple wood, while its powerful sound embodies the rich, essential alto voice that defines the viola.
The viola plays an essential role in any string ensemble, yet crafting violas that possess both the range and clarity needed for solo performances, as well as the power and depth required for ensemble work, remains a challenge.

We believe this instrument embodies those very qualities and offers exceptional versatility. The size gives it the broad sound but the narrow upper bout and string length makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of artists. All the purflings used for this quintet was made and dyed by hand using pear and walnut in accordance with the original instruments.
