Wood
We exclusively use a selection of high-quality tonewoods when crafting our instruments. The maple wood is most commonly of Balkan origin, but we also use locally sourced Italian maple, known as Oppio, which has a higher density and a distinctive greyish hue that lends itself well to antique-style varnishes. Our spruce wood for the soundboard comes from Val di Fiemme, where a unique microclimate fosters a regular growth pattern, making it renowned worldwide for its use in instrument making.Sound
The sound of this viola model is rich, powerful, and direct. Its smaller dimensions complement its big voice.Varnish
The varnish we use is an oil-based varnish made with natural resins and pigments. Although the base formula has remained the same for several years, the results vary slightly each time, adding to the uniqueness of each instrument.Dimensions
About Gasparo da Salò
Gasparo Bertolotti or as he is best known Gasparo da Salò was born in 1542. He is one of the earliest master luthiers who alongside Andrea Amati is credited with giving the modern violin its shape. He was a gifted double bass player and an active member of the Brescian music environment. He apparently survived the plague of 1577 which killed of many prolic musicians and artisans in the Brescian area and lived until 1609. It is believed that his designed was studied Antonio Stradivari and was a source of inspiration for his long model. Gasparo da Salò’s instruments are characterized by the eclectic and creative freedom of the early master luthiers.
